INSPIRATION
I was born and raised on the North Shore of Massachusetts. The coast has always been my playground — the backdrop to so many of my earliest memories. Long beach days, salty air, warm evenings, and the feeling that time moved a little differently near the water. Those memories have stayed with me, and they quietly live inside my work.
The constant movement of the water, the push and pull of the tides, the rich layers and textures found near the sea — this is where I feel most at home. It is the rhythm that drives my work.
Beyond the natural world, I’m deeply inspired by the joyful memories of childhood, especially the places and moments that shaped my summers. Certain colors, certain scents can instantly transport me — bringing a sense of nostalgia and happiness that often finds its way into my paintings.
My formal training is rooted in sculpture and three-dimensional form, and that foundation continues to influence how I approach painting. I’m most comfortable working large scale, moving freely around the canvas, building layer upon layer. I often push a piece to its limits before consciously pulling it back. A professor once told me, “Knowing when to stop is the most important part of painting.” That idea has stayed with me — painting feels like an ongoing dance along the fine line between underworked and overworked.
In the end, I am always searching for the stillness within the creative storm.
Art has the power to define a space — or to expand beyond it. An artist can build boundaries or intentionally step outside them. That tension is what draws me to this work and why I’ve devoted my life to both creating and teaching art. Sometimes I know exactly where I’m going. Other times, I don’t. That is the freedom of art.
